Here are some questions and model answers for a Year 1 English lesson:


Reading Comprehension

Text:

Once upon a time, there was a little rabbit named Benny. Benny loved to hop around the meadow and play with his friends. One day, Benny found a shiny red apple under a tree. He was very excited and wanted to share it with his friends.


Questions:

1. What is the name of the little rabbit?

   - Model Answer: The name of the little rabbit is Benny.

2. What did Benny find under the tree?

   - Model Answer: Benny found a shiny red apple under the tree.

3. How did Benny feel when he found the apple?

   - Model Answer: Benny was very excited when he found the apple.

4. What did Benny want to do with the apple?

   - Model Answer: Benny wanted to share the apple with his friends.


Vocabulary

Questions:

1. What does the word "meadow" mean?

   - Model Answer: A meadow is a field with grass and flowers.

2. What does the word "shiny" mean?

   - Model Answer: Shiny means something that reflects light and looks bright.


Writing

Question:

1. Write a sentence using the word "excited."

   - Model Answer: I was excited to go to the park with my family.


Grammar

Questions:

1. Identify the noun in the sentence: "The cat is sleeping."

   - Model Answer: The noun in the sentence is "cat."

2. Identify the verb in the sentence: "She runs fast."

   - Model Answer: The verb in the sentence is "runs."


Speaking and Listening

Activity:

1. Ask the pupils to share a story about a time they found something special. Encourage them to use descriptive words and speak in complete sentences.

Make the lesson interactive

Here are some ideas to make your Year 1 English lesson more interactive:


Reading Comprehension

Storytelling Circle: Have pupils sit in a circle and take turns reading parts of the story aloud. Encourage them to use different voices for characters.


Vocabulary

Word Hunt: Hide word cards around the classroom. When pupils find a card, they must say the word and its meaning.


Writing

Sentence Building: Provide pupils with word cards and have them build sentences. They can work in pairs or small groups.


Grammar

Noun and Verb Sorting: Create a sorting game where pupils categorise words into nouns and verbs.


Speaking and Listening

Show and Tell: Have pupils bring in an item from home and share a story about it with the class.
