Teaching English to Year 3 Pupils

Here are some questions and model answers for a Year 3 English lesson. These cover a range of skills including comprehension, grammar, and creative writing.


Comprehension

Text:

Once upon a time, there was a little girl named Lily who loved to explore the forest near her home. One day, she found a hidden path that led to a magical garden filled with talking animals and sparkling flowers.


Questions:

1. What is the name of the little girl in the story?

   - Model Answer: The little girl's name is Lily.

2. Where did Lily love to explore?

3. What did Lily find one day?

Grammar

1. Identify the nouns in the following sentence: "The cat sat on the mat."

   - Model Answer: The nouns are "cat" and "mat."

2. Change the following sentence to past tense: "She runs to the park."

   - Model Answer: She ran to the park.

3. Fill in the blank with the correct form of the verb: "He ___ (to eat) an apple."

   - Model Answer: He eats an apple.


Creative Writing

Prompt:

Imagine you have a pet dragon. Write a short story about an adventure you have with your dragon.


Model Answer:

One sunny day, I decided to take my pet dragon, Sparky, for a flight over the mountains. We soared high above the clouds, feeling the cool breeze on our faces. Suddenly, we spotted a village in trouble. A fire had broken out, and the villagers were panicking. Sparky and I swooped down and used his fiery breath to create a firebreak, stopping the flames from spreading. The villagers cheered and thanked us for saving their homes. It was an adventure I'll never forget!

Spelling Practice
